A seventeenth century Garden Almanac.
Saturdays - 19th and 26th May 2018, 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm. FREE.
Deptford, Southeast London was home to one of England's greatest horticulturists John Evelyn.
At the John Evelyn Community Garden we will be sowing and planting edible plants he grew in his
͚Olitory-Garden or kitchen garden. We will also be designing and planting a new bed this year. Taking
inspiration from John Evelyn's garden at Sayes Court we will be creating a bed that incorporates
both edible and decorative plants from species he had in his garden.
We will investigate the origins of these plants at a time when new plants were being introduced
from across the globe in the 16th and 17th centuries, or accidentally introduced by the ships coming
and going from the Royal Dock yard in Deptford.
Who can attend: All welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by a
responsible adult at all times. Wear clothes you don't mind getting mucky and stout shoes. Gloves
and light refreshments provided.
